It’s only two years since I was sitting in your seats so it’s not hard to imagine what’s going through your mind, Anxious and Excited. Probably wondering what the Wharton Experience will be like for you. Well, here's my view about what this place is all about.

The Wharton experience is not just about gaining knowledge and skills
The Wharton experience is not just about going to a school with a great brand name that makes your grandparents proud
The Wharton experience is not only about increasing your monthly salary after graduation
Rather, the Wharton experience is really a transformational journey, and that is what makes this place different from any other place in the world.

During the two years, you will be surrounded by the best faculty in the world and engage in amazing classroom experiences. But the Wharton transformation does not happen only in the classrooms. The Wharton transformation does not happen only in the bars either, although a lot of people experience a different kind of transformation. It’s rather a combination of both. In addition to your classes, most of you will be devoting a large portion of your time here on extra-curricular activities such as clubs, conferences, leadership ventures, entrepreneurial experiments. The motto here is, “Learn more, Do More, and Be more.” At Wharton, the strong Transformational DNA forms an intertwining double spiral between learning and taking action, and will constantly push you toward recreating, redefine and reinvent yourselves everyday.

Many of us come from work places where success is defined as “not failing”. At Wharton, it is the opposite. At Wharton, we embrace a culture of challenge. Taking risks are respected. Failure is rewarded as long as you learn from it. The most common phrase you’ll hear in this building is “get out of your comfort zone”. Don’t be worried about finding the right clubs and the right classes. There is no right or wrong. Try something new. You have a chance to step outside of your comfort zone and learn from your mistakes in a low-risk environment. If you don’t at least flirt with failure while you are here, how will you ever know what you are fully capable of?

Before I came to Wharton,
I never imagined I would serve as a strategic consultant for a local high-tech startup in Philadelphia,
I never imagined I would writing an article in one of Japan’s largest newspapers,
I never imagined I would perform stand-up comedy at a rundown local comedy club in front of hundreds of drunk people,
I never imagined I would be spending new years eve on the coast side of Antarctica sipping a Bloody Mary made out of glacier ice,
And I never imagined I would be playing the sax in front of you guys.

Never in my life had I done ANY of these things. Never would I have been able to do any of these things alone. It is only because of the many friends, family and faculty in this community who have pushed and encouraged me to take on these challenges.

IF you’re like me, you probably came here because somewhere in you, you have a burning desire to change. We envision to transform ourselves, but also aspire to transform the world, sharing a sincere desire to impact something bigger than ourselves. In two year from now, you’ll probably look back at today and realize the enormity of the mountain you’ve climbed. You look down and become awed and humbled to recognize how far you’ve come without even noticing it. As the rest of the world shrugs its shoulders in the deep valleys of post-crisis uncertainty, you will find yourselves standing upon a summit looking far into the future with vision and passion. You’ll be proud of how much you’ve challenged yourself, how much more confident you are about who you are. And you’ll be sharing this joy with the brightest group of friends, who have sometimes competed but more often helped you climb this tremendous mountain together. The world will look different.

Remember, those are very special seats that you are sitting in. Seats where many of your friends would have dreamed of sitting in today. I hope you cherish this moment. I hope you take a second to congratulate yourselves. Because you’ve all made it to the greatest business school in the world. Welcome to Wharton!

welcome weekend
